MOTHER-OF-TWO Lydia Price is demanding a council stops a trial policy to leave cemetery gates unlocked overnight after thieves stole ornaments from her dead son's grave.
Mrs Price said she was shocked to discover beads and decorations at her son Vito's grave in Tunstall cemetery had been stolen in an overnight theft.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council is leaving gates open overnight at eight of its nine cemeteries until Saturday as a trial. They are usually closed shortly before sunset throughout the year to keep out thieves and vandals.
But the council said the cost of securing them, which is handled by a private company, has increased and is now costing too much.
Mrs Price's son Vito died of natural causes at the age of five on Christmas Eve in 2007.
His grave was targeted overnight between Thursday night and Friday morning.
The 34-year-old, who is also mother to Jason, aged 14, and Alisha, aged 12, said: "It is really upsetting, not just for me, but for my other children as well.
"I go to the grave every day, sometimes in the morning and at night. They have taken holy beads and also ornaments.
"It was fine when it was left on Thursday but by Friday the items had gone. Things are only going to get worse now that people know the cemeteries are being left open all the time."
Mrs Price, of Tunstall, added that it is not the first time graves have been targeted and that security must be improved.
Campaigner Peter Chadwick. chairman of Stoke-on-Trent Graves Action Group, said: "We are getting more complaints now the gates are unlocked.
"Clearly the trial is not working out. The cemeteries need to be locked at night. Some people just take pleasure in smashing things up."
Residents in Burslem have also raised concerns about cars cutting through the cemetery as a short cut because of gates being left open.
Only Carmountside cemetery is being locked overnight as several council environmental staff are based there.
Tony Oakman, director of adult and neighbourhood services at the council, said: "We understand that it is extremely distressing for the family to have items stolen from the grave of a loved one.
"So far we have not had any complaints of anti-social behaviour in our cemeteries since we introduced the trial scheme. We do need to know if people have experienced any problems so if any items have been stolen we would recommend they contact both us and police."

if you are white english you are discriminated against here is proof

English girl barred from Government job...because she is wrong kind of white

A teenage science student has been banned from applying for a training programme with the Environment Agency because she is white and English.
The recruitment agency handling the scheme told Abigail Howarth, 18, that there was no point in her submitting an application because of her ethnic background.
But bizarrely she could have applied if she had been white and Welsh, Scottish or Irish.

Turned down: Abigail Howarth
Abigail, who wanted to join the Agency's flood management programme, saw an advert in a local newspaper offering positions in the Anglia region where she lives, complete with a £13,000-a-year tax-free grant.
It made no mention of the ban on white English applicants, merely noting that candidates from ethnic minorities, such as "Asian, Indian' and "White Other, e.g. Irish, Welsh, Scottish', were encouraged to put themselves forward.
Abigail, of Little Straughton, Bedfordshire, said: "I was really disappointed. To be told being "White English" ruled me out in my home county shocked me. I know why there are positive action training schemes to assist those who are genuinely discriminated against but when it's broken down to this level it seems crazy to me.
"I really wanted to work for the agency and I was very excited - followed by feeling very disappointed.
"I would not have minded had I been beaten for the position by somebody better able than me."

Abigail, who is awaiting the results of A-Levels in environmental science, geography and geology, emailed PATH National Ltd, the company handling applications.
She asked: "Am I correct in assuming that as I am English (White) I need not apply as the preference is for the minorities you have listed, or can I apply anyway?'
Three days later, PATH recruitment officer, Bola Odusi, replied: "Thank you for your enquiry unfortunately the traineeship opportunity in <\[>sic] targeted towards the ethnic minority group to address their under representations in the professions under the Race Relations Act amended 2000."
Such a policy may breach Race Relations legislation as employers must prove ethnic groups are under-represented before using positive discrimination strategies.
The Environment Agency admitted it had 'no evidence that white Welsh, Scottish or Irish workers were under-represented' in the Anglia region.
South West Bedfordshire Tory MP Andrew Selous said: "I think this is complete nonsense and the Environment Agency should be taking the best people, irrespective of their background.
"This is obviously borne out of some idiotic quota system. Abigail should have been able to apply and been judged on her own merits. I will raise this when I have a meeting with the Environment Agency next month."
PATH National's organisational development manager, Mary McDowell, said: "The "White Welsh", "White Irish" and "White Scottish" is a technicality in law - if they are a minority, they are entitled to places on these schemes - they are not part of the majority group, which is "White English".
"The "White English" in this area are the majority group and hence could not apply.
"That is the way the law is laid. This is a chance for people who might be less employable to gain experience, just experience. Public-sector organisations have a duty to ensure they reflect the make-up of the society they serve."
The Environment Agency says 387 of its 12,000 workers claim BME (Black and Minority Ethnic) status. A spokesman added: "The Commission for Racial Equality has confirmed we are acting legally."
A CRE spokeswoman said: "The Commission will be checking with the Environment Agency to clarify the current situation regarding their positive action initiatives.
"Positive action can only be used to encourage or train particular under-represented groups."

Bogus callers strike again

please make your elderly and vulnerable neighbours and relatives that there are a gang of bogus callers in the area they have already struck in bentilee and bucknall. please refuse to let anyone in without a prior appointment.

Be aware of bogus callers

Staffordshire Police is warning people to be on their guard against suspicious callers at the door following seven distraction-type incidents in Stoke-on-Trent and North Staffordshire.
The families of the elderly and vulnerable are also being encouraged to warn their relatives against opening the door to such callers.
The advice comes after bogus officials struck at homes in Chesterton, Kidsgrove, Mow Cop, Burslem, Newcastle and Bucknall throughout yesterday, Tuesday 13 September.
It is believed three or four men are working together and used water-related rouses to try and trick their way into the homes of elderly and vulnerable people. The offenders may have access to a grey-coloured vehicle.
Between 10am and 10.30am the offenders called at a property in Third Avenue, Kidsgrove, and claimed to be from the ‘water board’.
The offenders called at the home of an 83-year-old woman in Audley Road, Chesterton, at approximately 11.50am yesterday, claiming they needed to check the water.
At approximately 2pm a man called at the address of a 92-year-old man in Derby Place, Newcastle, claiming he was there to repair the toilet. After the man had left it was discovered a quantity of cash was missing from the property.
An offender claiming to be from the ‘water board’ tricked his way into the home of an 85-year-old woman in Dorchester Walk, Bentilee, at approximately 2.30pm.
At approximately 4.15pm a man tricked his way into a property in Robert Heath Street, Burslem, claiming the water needed to be turned off because the road had been dug up. He fled the scene after realising the occupant’s granddaughter was in the house.
An offender called at the home of two adjacent properties in Moorland Road, Mow Cop, at approximately 5.40pm asking to check the water.
An investigation into all the incidents is now underway by detectives, who are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry including extensive house-to-house enquiries and gathering (CCTV) closed circuit television footage from the locality.
Officers want to speak to anyone with information, or who saw suspicious persons and/or vehicles in the area prior to the incident.
Residents are encouraged to contact police if and every time they have suspicions about any caller at their door.
Even if someone claims to be an official - and that includes police officers and council representatives - people must get their ID checked out.
Residents are asked to remain vigilant at all times and to follow this advice:
  • Never trust anyone calling at the door without a prior appointment. Should you receive such a call leave the door locked. The caller will hear you through the door when you ask them who they are. If they state they are from a utilities company ask for your account number, they should have this, if not, do not let them in and tell them to leave, and that you are calling the Police.
  • Always ask for ID, and check it.
  • Do not allow anyone to carry work out on your home, or sell you anything when they cold call at the door. If you do require work to be done, INSTIGATE IT YOURSELF, by phoning three companies asking for like for like quotes. Then decide.
  • Do not keep large amounts of cash in your home, you may think that you have the perfect hiding place, but these criminals will find it.
  • Please remember there is no such company as the Water Board, Gas Board or Electric Board. These words are only used by offenders.
  • Always report any suspicious behaviour to the police, if you think it is suspicious, it probably is.
  • Keep your doors locked even when you are home.
Residents should also follow the stop, chain and check rule when people call at the door:
  • STOP - If you are not expecting anybody and they don’t have an appointment - don’t let them in
  • CHAIN - Use your door chain or bar before opening the door
  • CHECK - Ask to see ID and double check this.

labour council do it again hit the vulnerable

DO THE LABOUR COUNCIL NOT CARE THE DISTRESS CAUSED WHEN LOVED ONES GRAVES ARE DAMAGED OR DEFACED FOR GODS SAKE HOW MUCH TIME DOES IT TAKE TO LOCK A GATE.
I IMPLORE EVERYONE READING THIS TO CONTACT YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR AND PROTEST
THIS IS JUST ANOTHER WAY TO HURT THE GOOD PEOPLE OF STOKE ON TRENT

CEMETERIES across Stoke-on-Trent are being left open all night because of the rising cost of locking them.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council has launched a month-long trial in which gates at eight of the nine cemeteries are not being secured in the evening.
They are usually closed shortly before sunset throughout the year to keep thieves and vandals from entering overnight.
But the council said the cost of securing them, handled by a private company, has increased and is not economical.
Only Carmountside cemetery will have its gates locked as several council environmental staff are based there.
Now residents are warning the cemeteries could become "villains' hideaways."
Retired Mavis Blurton, of Sneyd Hill, lives in a house which backs directly on to Burslem cemetery.
The 70-year-old is concerned she will be disturbed by youths entering the cemetery at night, and that the grave of her husband Terrence will be damaged.
She said: "I don't understand why we should have to put up with yobs being allowed in to drink around the graves.
"There are also going to be cars cutting through as it is a shortcut.
"The council changed the gates a few years ago and I don't understand why they have spent all that money if they are just going to leave them open.
"Already I have had to face litter and beer bottles when visiting my husband's grave and with the gates left open all night it can only get worse."
Jim Keogh, of Hanley Road, next to Burslem cemetery, said: "There have been many incidents there already, that's why they have already installed cameras.
"They will become villains' hideaways if people are allowed to come and go overnight.
"Part of me wants something to happen so the council can see the error of what they are doing, but on the other hand it is a beautiful place."
Councillor Gwen Hassall, cabinet member for housing and neighbourhoods, said last night: "We are, at this point, only trialling leaving the gates open at city cemeteries overnight.
"Increases in security costs have made it difficult to provide the service in its current form.
"This trial has been running since the start of September and, so far, there have been no reported incidents of anti-social behaviour.
We will continue to monitor the situation over the next month to see if it is appropriate to continue."
